The Johannesburg Metro Police Department official who was caught in a bribery operation involving learner’s and driver’s licences has been suspended.
Detective Inspector Patrick Mabasa from the JMPD’s internal investigations unit confirmed this today – three weeks after GroundUp revealed that two men – identified as “Jo” and “Lucky” – had solicited bribes in exchange for the licences.
Jo charged R3,000 for both, while Lucky said he could organise both for R4,300.
Mabasa said Jo – who had claimed to work at the JMPD – was only a “runner” at the organisation and not an employee.
Lucky, who was captured on hidden camera in his JMPD uniform while soliciting a bribe, was served with a notice of suspension today.
The Inspector said Lucky would face a disciplinary hearing.
