Zwelinzima Vavi, the suspended General Secretary of COSATU, was present at the Khayelitsha Commission today. He will submit an affidavit to the Commission.
Two weeks ago his sister’s grand-daughter was murdered in Khayelitsha. Details are still unclear, but it appears that SAPS officials investigating her case have done a poor job.
His involvement in the Commission and her murder case will add even more pressure to an already scrutinised Khayelitsha SAPS.
During the lunch interval, Vavi spoke to Khayelitsha residents. He was scathing of the police, describing a “complete crisis in SAPS and in the criminal justice system”. He went on to say “There is no leadership in the police … [this Commission] highlights the crisis in Khayelitsha and across the nation … If this is happening in Khayelitsha, close your eyes and imagine what is happening in the former Transkei and former Ciskei.”
