Cape Flats residents demand better policing
Cape Flats Concerned Residents (CFCR) protested in front of parliament yesterday morning and handed over a memorandum to the provincial and national government demanding better policing on the Cape Flats.
CFCR also called for the military to assist the police when turf wars break out between rival gangs in the area and for some SAPS member to be investigated for their involvement in the local drug trade. Mr. Charles Ford, administrator for the presidency, told CFCR that the memorandum will take approximately four weeks to process after residents requested the situation to be dealt with as urgently as possible.
CFCR called for some areas to be declared a state of emergency as violent gang wars flared over the last few weeks in Mitchells Plain, Manenberg and surrounding neighbourhoods.
The memorandum, among other demands, called for the president to institute a Commission of Inquiry to investigate criminal organisations operating in the Western Cape, and for the City of Cape Town to evict drug lords who rent council properties. It also asked that courts deny bail to people found in possession of illegal firearms.
