Storm damages homes and knocks over trees
A severe storm has caused flooding across Cape Town. Winds of up to 80 kilometres per hour have been recorded.
City authorities report that houses have been damaged in the informal settlements of BM Section in Khayelitsha and Marcus Harvey in Philippi. Trees have been uprooted in Constantia, Belhar, Delft, Kloofnek, Fish Hoek, Wynberg and Glencairn. Power lines are down in Retreat. Roofs have been blown off in Schaapkraal, Philippi, Lavender Hill, Imizamo Yethu, Hout Bay and Masiphumelele. Flooded roads have caused damage to property in Kensington and Wetton. Various City departments are attending to these incidents.
The City’s Disaster Management unit in consultation with the South African Weather Service has advised that the worst of the storm has passed, and the weather should improve between 7 and 9 tonight.
