PHOTO ESSAY - On 23 October students marched to the Union Buildings in Pretoria to demand a reduction in university fees. Juliette Garms photographed the event. (Times in captions are approximate.)

10:00: People gather at Burgers park in Pretoria before the march to Union Buildings.

11:15: March proceeds peacefully.

12:00: A man looks down at the gathering in front of Union Buildings.

12:00: Some protesters try to break the protection fences surrounding the Union Buildings. Police and media stand on the other side.

13:00: Tension escalates. Toilets and plastic materials are burned.

14:00: The fence between students and police has been broken down. Students are waiting for President Jacob Zuma to address them.

15:00: Students are becoming angry as they waited for more than an hour to hear that President Jacob Zuma will not address them.

15:00: Disappointed that the president won't show, some students throw rocks at the police and media, who run away.

15:15: Police use rubber bullets and teargas to disperse students.
