Strike at Engen garage
Workers complain management promises have not been kept
About 12 workers at Engen Windsor garage in Parow today went on strike today, accusing management of not keeping promises made when the garage was opened in April.
The workers, most of whom are immigrants, said they earned R2,700 a month. They said they had been told that after a three months probation period they would be paid permanent wages but this had not happened. They worked 11-hour shifts, said the workers, who did not want to give their names.
But the manager, who also did not want to give his name, said management was still in the process of deciding who to appoint to a permanent job.
This would be finalised in a couple of weeks, he said.
