Students at nursing college protest exclusions
Dispute over exclusion of seven students
Classes at Lilitha Nursing College in East London were suspended on Friday, following student protests.
The protest comes after seven students were excluded from the college early this year. Protesters accused management of not having followed the college’s policy when excluding them.
The seven were excluded after they failed their major subject twice. According to the protesting students, the college management has no right to exclude students; only the college council can do that.
The protesters blocked the campus entrance, refusing to let management leave the college.
Students are also complaining about not receiving their book allowance this year.
When GroundUp arrived at the college, students were having a meeting with management inside the campus. But the meeting broke down over the question of who is responsible for excluding students.
Students then threatened not to return to classes. An administrator then addressed the students and said that if they did not return to classes, classes would be suspended.
College management refused to comment.
